Employer Guide to Apprenticeships

Employer Guide to Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a paid, work-based training programme that enables individuals to develop new skills and gain recognised qualifications while working alongside experienced colleagues. Apprenticeships are an effective way to attract new talent to your business, as well as a cost-effective solution for upskilling existing staff and securing the skills you need for the future.

Find out more from the Government guide to quality Apprenticeships.

Employer Obligations:

  • Apprentices must have a contract of employment that outlines the duration, pay, and terms and conditions of their employment. Apprentices have the same rights as other employees, including paid holiday and sick pay.
  • From 01/04/2026, the Apprenticeship Minimum Wage is £8.00 per hour (with a further increase expected in April 2027). Employers may pay apprentices of any age the Apprenticeship Minimum Wage for the first 12 months; however, after this period, they must increase pay to at least the standard National Minimum Wage for the apprentice’s age group.
  • Apprentices must be paid through a PAYE scheme and cannot be self-employed.
  • Apprentices should have a designated workplace mentor.
  • Employers should allocate time for learning and development within the apprentice’s normal working hours. This may include college day-release sessions, mentoring, online learning, or other development activities.
