Grimsby Institute Awarded Regional First with Primate Licence for Animal Management Centre

The Grimsby Institute, part of the TEC Partnership, is proud to announce that its Animal Management Centre has become the first facility in North East Lincolnshire to be awarded a primate licence for the care and housing of a troop of marmosets on site.

This significant milestone marks a major achievement for the Grimsby Institute and the wider region. A primate licence is a legal requirement for any organisation housing primates in the UK, ensuring that strict national standards for animal welfare, accommodation, and specialist care are met. Its approval confirms that the Grimsby Institute’s facilities, operational practices, and welfare provisions meet the highest standards set out for primate husbandry.

The newly developed Animal Management Centre features purpose-built enclosures specifically designed to support the complex physical, social, and behavioural needs of marmosets. These specialist environments not only ensure exceptional standards of care for the animals but also provide students with invaluable, hands-on learning opportunities in a professional setting.

Zoe Langsley-Hogg, Lead Animal Care Technician at the Grimsby Institute, said:

“Securing the primate licence is an incredibly proud moment for our team. It reflects the dedication, expertise, and attention to detail that goes into ensuring our animals receive the highest standards of care. From designing and maintaining specialist enclosures to meeting rigorous welfare requirements, this has been a true team effort. Most importantly, it allows us to give our students real-world experience in primate care, preparing them for careers in the animal management sector.”

Achieving the licence has required extensive collaboration across multiple teams, including animal care specialists, technicians, and estates staff, all working together to meet the detailed requirements necessary for approval. Their collective efforts have ensured that every aspect of the facility aligns with best practice in animal welfare and education.

Cheryl Eade, Campus Principal at the Grimsby Institute, added:

“This achievement represents a significant step forward not only for the Grimsby Institute but for animal management education across the region. Being the first in North East Lincolnshire to hold a primate licence demonstrates our commitment to excellence, innovation, and providing outstanding learning environments for our students. We are incredibly proud of the teams involved and excited about the opportunities this creates for future students.”

The introduction of licensed primate care at the Animal Management Centre reinforces the Grimsby Institute’s commitment to delivering industry-relevant education, supporting students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to succeed in animal care and welfare careers.
