Grimsby apprentice named finalist in national NCFE Aspiration Awards

An apprentice from Grimsby has been recognised on the national stage after being named a finalist in the NCFE Aspiration Awards 2026.

Sophie Smith, a Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprentice at the Grimsby Institute, part of the TEC Partnership, has been shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year. As part of her studies, Sophie works at Sarah’s Childminding, where she has quickly made a positive impact on both colleagues and the children in her care.

The NCFE Aspiration Awards celebrate the achievements of learners, apprentices, educators and organisations across the UK who have demonstrated dedication, commitment and excellence in education and skills.

Sophie’s nomination recognises her passion for early years education, her commitment to supporting children’s development, and the strong partnership between training provider and employer that has helped her thrive.

Speaking about being named a finalist, Sophie said:

“I am so grateful for this recognition. The nomination wouldn’t have been achievable if it wasn’t for the support of both Sarah and my tutors at the Grimsby Institute. Just to be nominated is such a huge achievement, not just for me but for us as childcare professionals working closely together for the benefit of the children that attend the setting.”

Sarah Farrow-Browne, from Sarah’s Childminding, added:

“Sophie starting her apprenticeship at the setting was like a breath of fresh air, bringing new ideas and inspiration. Working closely together we’ve put the ideas into practice to create an extra special place for the children to learn and grow.”

Kevin Goodger, Group Executive Director of Apprenticeships at TEC Partnership, said:

“We are incredibly proud to see Sophie recognised as a finalist in the NCFE Aspiration Awards. Her dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to giving children the very best start in life truly stand out.

“Sophie’s success highlights the strength of apprenticeships in our region and the positive impact they have on both learners and local employers. Early years education is vital to our communities, and achievements like this show the exceptional talent we have here in Greater Lincolnshire and the Humber.

“This recognition is also a testament to the strong support provided by employers like Sarah’s Childminding, who play such an important role in developing the future workforce.”

The achievement is being celebrated across the TEC Partnership, with staff praising Sophie for her professionalism, creativity and caring approach.

Her success also shines a spotlight on the importance of investing in skills and training opportunities within the region, helping to develop talented professionals who will support local communities and future generations.

The winners of the NCFE Aspiration Awards will be announced later this year.
