Access to Policing

This intensive one-year access to policing programme is aimed exclusively at adults who are looking to join the police force or work within the criminal justice system

What is Access to Policing?

There is a wide range of professional roles available within these sectors, and this access to policing course will give you the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the law, psychology, sociology and criminology to prepare you for the next steps in your career. This pathway is supported by Humberside Police and will provide you with the perfect first step towards your career in the police or criminal justice system.

Don’t worry if you have been out of education for a while, or have never been to college, this course is supported with study skills throughout to ensure you develop these key skills alongside learning about policing. Completing this course does not guarantee you a place at HE or recruitment to the police force. It is a stepping stone toward your future career.

Where does the course lead?

The Access to HE Diploma is a full Level 3 qualification and will enable you to progress on to study a degree in Professional Policing, Law, Criminology, Psychology or Sociology if you would like to obtain a degree before joining the police. You can also progress onto the official Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) and earn whilst you learn!

Not all careers need a degree, and an Access to HE Diploma in Policing is also an excellent way to maximise your job prospects, such as:

  • Police Community Support Officer (PCSO)
  • Private Investigator
  • Community Support Worker.

What will I learn?

This diploma covers four key subject disciplines:
Law – Exploring elements of crime, the powers of the police and human rights
Psychology – Key aspects of psychology, developmental psychology and psychological disorders
Sociology – Crime & deviance, social inequality and the application of sociological approaches
Criminology – Current issues in criminology

Alongside the specialist subject disciplines, you will be supported to develop your study skills to ensure you are well equipped to complete your assessments and thrive in an HE environment.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in a range of methods including essays, presentations, reports and case studies. You will be required to attend college two days per week for the course, and assignments will need to be completed from home.

What are the entry requirements?

To study on this programme, you will need a Level 2 qualification in English and maths, and be aged over 19.

Is there funding?

If you are aged under 23 and this is your first full Level 3, the course will be fully funded for you.

If you already have a Level 3, or are aged over 23, you can take out an Advanced Learner Loan to cover the tuition fees – however, if you progress onto and complete a degree, your loan for the Access Diploma is cleared.
