The demand for digital skills in today’s economy has reached a critical point. Research shows that employers are struggling to fill around one-third of vacancies due to a lack of appropriate digital skills among applicants, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Possessing basic digital skills is essential for unlocking opportunities for job seekers and addressing the shortage of digitally skilled workers in the UK.
The term ‘digital skills’ covers a wide range of competencies, knowledge, and skills. A good baseline of digital skills, such as the ability to use productivity software tools, is critical for job seekers to qualify for middle and high-skill roles.
Those in deprived areas are also at risk of financial exclusion due to a lack of digital skills and resources. Research by Citizens Advice highlighted how one million people had disconnected their broadband because they could no longer afford it. This ‘data poverty’ means those without regular online access struggle to keep their skills up to date, apply for jobs, and access basic services.
As a response to this pressing issue, National Employer Training (NET) has developed a digital inclusion course to support local communities. This two-week course provides learners with Entry 3 to Level 2 qualifications that are crucial in today’s workforce. It covers all aspects of IT fundamentals, including email, internet safety and use of Wi-Fi hotspots, file storage and security, and Office 365 use. Additionally, as part of this course, we offer training in health and safety, equality and diversity, British values, and customer service to prepare learners for the workplace.
Upon successful completion of all units of the digital inclusion course, learners receive a laptop. This not only serves as a tool for employability and job seeking but also ensures that they are not financially excluded due to a lack of digital resources.
NET recently hosted a successful digital inclusion course with six residents from the YMCA Humber. The course was taught by Scott Walker, a skills and employability tutor for NET, who said:
“It’s always a pleasure teaching at the YMCA. The students, again, have been excellent, very dedicated, and a lot of fun to be around. They are a massive credit to themselves, and I am really pleased with the outcome.”
Vikki Platt, a keen participant, expressed her joy in learning new computer skills:
“Thank you for teaching me and being patient. I’ve learnt so much from this course, and it has let me brush up on my computer skills. I appreciate the laptop so much!”
