Financial Support

Depending on your personal circumstances, you may qualify for financial support funds. We’ve tried to streamline the application process and make it easier for you to get the help you need. The available schemes are:

16-19 Bursary and Vulnerable Young People’s Bursary

Learners who meet the required eligibility criteria, with a household income of less than £45,000, may qualify for help towards travel and meal allowances. To find out more, please speak to us on 01472 311222 or email [email protected].

Bursary Support for Vulnerable Young People

Learners aged 16-18 may be eligible for a VYP bursary worth up to £1,200 if they are: in local authority care; care leavers; on income support or Universal Credit in their own name; in receipt of both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payments.

Free College Meals

If you are aged under 18 and come from a household dependent on specific benefits, then you may be entitled to free meals on the days you attend college. Students with additional learning support needs, aged up to 25, may also be eligible.

Care to Learn

The Care to Learn scheme is a government-funded programme that funds childcare for young people who are living and learning in England. If you are a parent or guardian under 20 years old, you may be entitled to £160 per child to cover registered childcare costs.

19+ Discretionary Learner Support Fund

Learners who meet the necessary eligibility criteria, with a household income of less than £45,000, may receive financial help towards travel, childcare, meal allowances and hardship.   There may be help towards course fees for learners who are not fully funded. This bursary fund can’t be used to pay for essential kit and equipment or trips.

Advanced Learner Loan Bursary

Learners over the age of 19, who are studying on a Level 3 or Level 4 course and who have taken out the Advanced Learning Loan to pay their fees, and with a household income of less than £45,000, can also apply for the Advanced Learner Loan Bursary Fund which can help towards the cost of learning support, travel, childcare, meal allowances and hardship.

20+ Childcare

Learners aged over 20 who are eligible for the 19+ DLS Fund and Advanced Learner Loans Bursary can

also apply for help with childcare costs while they attend college, which would help to cover any costs incurred above the free nursery hours provided by the government.

Higher Education Support Fund

Learners on Higher Education courses who are in financial hardship or are awaiting payments of student loans can apply to the HESF for help with emergency living costs. For more information about eligibility and how to apply please go to https://grimsby.ac.uk/degree-level/financial-support/

Higher Education Care Leavers Scholarship

The University Centre Grimsby (UCG) will provide scholarships to a number of care leavers for the duration of their higher education course within the TEC Partnership at the UCG campus, up to a maximum of three years’ worth of study. This would include support for tuition fees, accommodation, college credits and a maintenance/travel subsidy. For more information go to https://grimsby.ac.uk/degree-level/financial-support/

Care Leavers Scholarship Guidance

In 2024/25, the University Centre Grimsby (UCG) will provide 4 scholarships to Care Leavers for the duration of their higher education course within the TEC Partnership at the UCG campus, up to a maximum of three years’ worth of study. It will include: 

  • Tuition fees – These will be covered by the TEC Partnership for the duration of the higher education course within the TEC Partnership, up to a maximum of three years or two years for a Foundation Degree or HNC/HND. 
  • 52 weeks of accommodation will be provided during this time 
  • College credits worth £875 will be provided each year to go towards meals on campus 
  • A maintenance/travel subsidy of £4,000/year will be provided, payable in instalments as weekly BACS payments

This scholarship is available to applicants following an application, assessment and selection process. The closing date for applications is 30th June 2024.

Support grants

In 2024/25, 400 support grants of up to £250 will be awarded based on individual assessed needs. These can be requested throughout the year and applicants will be required to attend a one-to-one meeting about their support needs to be considered for a grant.

Students with learning difficulties or disabilities should apply for the Disabled Students Allowance in the first instance. For further information, visit www.direct.gov.uk website.

The college may be able to assist with financing a diagnostic assessment of specific learning difficulties (e.g. dyslexia) depending on financial circumstances.

This grant is not intended to pay for costs normally covered by Student Loans. Applications may be means tested and awards are allocated according to need.
