Beth Lister shares her apprenticeship journey!

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we reaffirm our commitment to investing in our staff through the apprenticeship levy, ensuring they receive high-quality training while gaining hands-on experience.

Beth Lister is our dedicated Business Administration apprentice at Grimsby Institute. She is a fantastic example of how apprenticeships can develop skills, confidence, and career opportunities.

Why did you enrol on this apprenticeship?

“I wanted a more hands-on approach to learning rather than an academic route, as well as to gain real-world experience.”

What aspects of the apprenticeship impacted you the most?

“One of the biggest benefits of my apprenticeship has been gaining practical workplace experience. Facing real-world and in-education challenges has taught me how to think on my feet and adapt to different situations, making me more resilient and efficient in my work.

“Another key aspect has been that I have built strong professional relationships through emailing, phone calls, and face-to-face meetings and learned the importance of clear and effective communication.”

Were there any challenges or obstacles you faced during your apprenticeship?

“Going from a small Saturday job to a full-time job was difficult to adjust to initially, but once I got used to it and made a routine, I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

How have you applied the skills and knowledge from your apprenticeship to real-world scenarios?

“One of the most valuable skills I have developed is professional communication. I have had to contact parents, which required me to remain professional, clear, and composed.

“My customer service and adaptability skills have also grown significantly. Sitting at the front desk, I am often the first point of contact for staff, students, and visitors.”

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

“Do not be afraid of what’s to come. Take every opportunity, as it has changed my life and will most likely change yours.

“Prepare to learn as you work, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You will always be supported.”
