University Centre Grimsby Hosts Annual Graduation Ceremony 2024

The University Centre Grimsby is excited to announce its annual graduation ceremony, will take place on Thursday, 17th October 2024. This event will celebrate the academic success of the graduating students and feature the presentation of honorary degrees to two distinguished individuals – Alex Baxter and Lee Freeman – in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to education, public service, and the local community.

This ceremony is a highlight for the University Centre Grimsby as it acknowledges individuals who have had a significant positive impact on both a local and national scale.

Honorary degree recipients

Alex Baxter, Managing Director of Joint Services Major Events Team and Chair of the Board of Governors at Franklin College, will receive an honorary degree for his remarkable leadership in supporting the Armed Forces and his dedication to education in North East Lincolnshire. Alex has been instrumental in organising major events that have boosted the region’s economy and attracted large numbers of visitors. His commitment to young people’s education is evident through his work with Franklin College and his efforts to create strong partnerships between local educational institutions, ensuring that local youth have ample opportunities to thrive.

Alex’s career includes service in the Royal Navy, leadership in the aviation industry, and managing complex security for major global events. He continues to serve the Armed Forces community in key public roles, including as Deputy Lieutenant for Lincolnshire.

Lee Freeman, HM Inspector of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, and former Chief Constable of Humberside Police, will be honoured for his transformational leadership in policing. Under his guidance, Humberside Police has become one of the top-performing police forces in the country. Lee was awarded the prestigious King’s Police Medal (KPM) in 2023 in recognition of his outstanding service.

Born and raised in Grimsby, Lee has dedicated his career to public service, beginning with the City of London Police and then playing key roles in Lincolnshire and Humberside Police. His efforts to improve safety and policing in the region have earned him national recognition.

Celebrating achievement

The graduation ceremony will take place at Great Grimsby Town Hall, where students, faculty, family members, and local leaders will come together to celebrate the success of the graduates. The event also serves as an opportunity to recognise Alex Baxter and Lee Freeman, whose contributions reflect the University’s commitment to leadership, public service, and education.

This occasion promises to inspire students and highlight the importance of education and service to the community.
