Student time capsule in the heart of the campus marks the 80th year of the Grimsby Institute

Students and staff proudly celebrate the college’s 80th year with a commemorative time capsule, sealed in the newly refurbished refectory warmly known as the ‘heart of the campus’.

Established in 1944 and initially supporting 2,000 students, The Grimsby Institute, now part of the TEC Partnership, has evolved into one of the largest colleges in the country, with over 15,000 students studying over 80,000 qualifications.

Throughout the last year, the Grimsby Institute has proudly celebrated over 80 years of supporting the local community, businesses, and students. Festivities have included tree planting ceremonies, community summer events, and now, a time capsule embedded in the heart of the campus.

The time capsule, kindly organised by Melonie Gresswell, Success Coach & Enrichment Co-ordinator, has student letters enclosed amongst photographs from the past. Current students at the Grimsby Institute wrote letters to their future selves, capturing their hopes and ambitions in time.

Senior staff and students gathered to seal the time capsule in the ‘heart of the campus’ on the 27th September 2024. Funded by a Department for Education Transformation Grant, the Grimsby Institute has recently invested over a million pounds into refurbishments of the campus’s refectory, student zones and University Centre lounge, creating a vibrant new hub for socialising and learning.

Duncan Wilson of Sewell Construction, who project managed the recent refurbishment works at the college, said:

“It’s been amazing to be part of the recent upgrades to the college, and the campus now looks absolutely fantastic. The facilities available to students have changed so much in the past 80 years, and we hope the recent campus makeover has inspired the next generation of students to continue learning and growing here at the heart of the campus.”
