Hair and Beauty learners showcase talents at internal competition

Hair and Beauty learners showcased their talents in a bid to win a range of prizes as part of a special internal competition.

Students from Levels 1, 2 and 3 Hairdressing, Beauty and Media Make Up took part in the contest, which was the culmination of weeks of hard work and preparation.

The morning was spent in the salons putting the finishing touches to their designs, based on themes including red carpet and best of British.

Learners were then judged by Chris Grimley of Fusion Hair, hair and media makeup artist Samantha Lyann, Julie Crompton of Dennis Williams, Kirsty Green of K and Co Salon, Claire Neal of Ellisons and Reema Stedford.

Katie Grantham, Programme Leader for Salon Professionals and Hair and Beauty Studies, said the event was about “having fun and being creative”.

“The standard has been amazing,” she added. “The beauty students have done special hairstyles while the hairdressers have all done their makeup, so there’s been great curriculum crossover.

“It gives learners great experience in terms of developing their creative skills and taking part in competitions.

“Hair and beauty is so focused on competitions so we’re making sure they’re getting industry ready and have the confidence to be bold and creative.”

The event was also attended by Andrea Schubach and Clare Harris from the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC), the UK’s leading membership organisation and insurance provider for hair and beauty professionals.

“We’re a not-for-profit company which does a lot to fight for regulation in the industry, and we’ve been here today talking to students about having insurance.

“We’ve been really impressed with the standard here today. There’s some amazing talent on show and the event has been very well run; we’re really impressed.

“There’s a good level of enthusiasm and the students have been very polite and interested in what we’ve had to say, so we have really enjoyed our visit.”
