Grimsby Institute Partners with Topcon Building Ltd for Innovative Animal Care Centre

We are delighted to announce the momentous ground-breaking of our state-of-the-art animal care teaching facility and veterinary practice at the Nuns Corner campus, in collaboration with Topcon Building Ltd. With planning approval secured at the end of last year, this marks a transformative journey to redefine animal care education and veterinary services in the region.

Our new circular building, strategically located on the western end of the campus, will house modern teaching spaces and an independent veterinary practice with overnight accommodation. Thoughtfully designed with the well-being of animals in mind, the facility will boast a courtyard area, outside enclosures, an aviary, and a dedicated dog-walking space.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for students living in and around the area of Grimsby to experience purpose-built Animal care facilities where each room has been individually designed to maximise animal welfare whilst offering a modern teaching and learning environment for learners who choose to study Further or Higher education animal care with us. 

The new open plan dog grooming facility provides a spacious environment for teaching grooming skills to level 2 and 3 dog groomers in an air-conditioned environment that ensures that dogs benefit from cooler environments in the summer months. Whilst our newly designed day crèche facilities also ensure that our doggy day creche visitors benefit from the new design, in addition the new building will accommodate a Veterinary facility providing a one stop shop for your doggy care needs!

We are super excited and proud to be able to share this new facility with our students and customers and feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to develop this from scratch in a way that benefit our animals and students”.

Seeking to replace our existing animal care teaching facility at Nunsthorpe Campus since 2017, we express our gratitude for the invaluable support of the Office for Students, an independent higher education regulator, contributing to the funding of this visionary project.

Upon completion, our facility will proudly showcase a diverse range of animals, including skunks, meerkats, rabbits, and primates, as outlined in our planning documents. The existing animal accommodation at Nunsthorpe Campus, home to marmosets, will be either repurposed or responsibly sold.

The ground-breaking ceremony signifies a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to advancing animal care education and veterinary practices. Our new facility, in collaboration with Topcon Building Ltd, is poised to set a benchmark for excellence in the field and contribute to the overall well-being of both students and animals.

The new ‘state of the art’ Centre will create huge opportunities for local Learners, Students and Youngsters who will be able to undertake the Animal Care curriculum in an interactive and engaging environment, equipping them with skills in Veterinary Nursing, Kennel and Cattery, Animal Welfare and Dog Grooming.

As a Grimsby-based contractor we welcomed the opportunity to be involved in key projects that positively impact our local area using our local workforce and supply chain and we look forward to seeing the centre support students to develop and progress their careers for years to come.

Construction commenced at the beginning of the new year, with a planned completion date in late 2024”.
