Global Game Jam visiting Grimsby this weekend

Learners are preparing to pit their wits against thousands of games designers from around the world as part of a major competition visiting Grimsby this weekend.

Global Game Jam is an international record-breaking contest, which challenges teams from around the world to create their own game in 48-hours.

The event will start and finish at University Centre Grimsby (UCG), Nuns Corner, this weekend, however for the first time teams will be working from home.

Youngsters can register at UCG from 3pm on Friday, January 26th, before learning the top secret theme for the weekend’s event.

Groups of game designers, creatives, programmers, level designers, 3D modellers, 2D pixel painters and artists will then put their heads together in a bid to create the best game.

Adrian Mills, Programme Leader for BA Games Design and Development and Independent Game Development, said “anything goes” – from video games to card and board games.

“Last year there were 900 jam sites around the world, of which we were one, so it’s a major event.

“The last few years we’ve had between 60 and 90 people coming in to take part including some ex-students, who really enjoy coming back.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for learners; they get a professional brief with an ultimate goal.

“They also get experience of working with a team, which prepares them for industry life.”

He added learners also come away with a piece of work to add to their portfolio.

“That’s something that employers always want to see. It shows initiative and the fact they aren’t afraid to take the initiative and try something new.”

Entrants have the option of submitting their game to the Global Game Jam website, putting it forward for global judging.

There will also be judging in-house on Sunday afternoon, with prizes of £300 in Amazon vouchers for the winners, £125 vouchers for second place and £75 vouchers for third.

It is free to sign up, however entrants are asked to pre-register at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/global-game-jam-grimsby-2018-tickets-40537550906

Registration closes at 5pm on Thursday, January 25th.
