Ellie-Mae Sanderson has always dreamt of becoming a nurse. Before taking that leap, she decided to build her confidence and expand her knowledge in both practical and academic aspects of healthcare.
That’s what led her to enrol on our FdSc Assistant Practitioner – Health course at University Centre Grimsby.
“I’ve always wanted to be a nurse but I wanted to develop professionally and academically before starting a nursing degree. This course gave me the opportunity to do both, while staying focused on a part of healthcare I’m passionate about.”
For Ellie-Mae, the clinical skills lessons were a standout part of the course. Working with simulation dummies in the clinical skills rooms gave her the chance to build confidence in a safe, controlled environment before heading out on placement.
“Practicing skills like blood pressure readings or dressings at the university helped me feel more confident when applying them in real healthcare settings. It’s made a real difference during placements and at work.”
The course’s structure with academic study followed by placement helped Ellie-Mae apply her learning to real-world scenarios. She also praised the supportive tutors who were there when challenges arose.
“They’ve always been approachable, even if I thought my questions were silly. When I struggled with confidence while presenting, they offered alternatives and gave me extra time to prepare. That made all the difference.”
Ellie-Mae faced personal challenges outside the classroom, but her tutors stood by her side, offering solutions and encouragement to keep her on track.
Placement opportunities were key in helping Ellie-Mae bring theory into practice.
“Everything we learn ties back to patient care. The anatomy and physiology modules gave me a real understanding of how the body works, and that knowledge, combined with clinical practice, makes me feel prepared for a career in healthcare.”
But it wasn’t just academic growth. Ellie-Mae’s biggest personal achievement has been a boost to her confidence and self-belief.
“Going on placement pushed me out of my comfort zone. I had to talk to people and navigate new situations, and that’s helped me grow both personally and professionally.”
Now, Ellie-Mae is preparing for her nursing degree, which she starts this September, something she says she wouldn’t have felt ready for without the foundation provided by her current course.
“This course has confirmed that healthcare is where I want to be. It’s also opened up doors to new roles I hadn’t previously considered.”
Ellie-mae encourages anyone considering the course to be prepared for the commitment.
“It’s time-consuming, especially during placement, but it’s so worth it. Make sure it’s what you want and be ready to grow.”
