About this apprenticeship

Specialist teaching assistants will work alongside colleagues to inspire learners to progress and achieve well. Specialist teaching assistants work across all age ranges, supporting a range of learners. In the Early Years, specialisms are achieved through continuing professional development opportunities subsequent to staff achieving a recognised qualification which enables them to work in a setting in accordance with the Early Years qualification requirements and standards.

Specialist teaching assistants may support provision related to special educational needs and disability (SEND), the social and emotional well-being, of learners, or within another area of specialist curriculum provision such as forest schools, EAL, subject-based interventions or music education.

What you will learn

  • Curriculum & Planning – Understand statutory/non-statutory curriculum frameworks, planning methods, and the difference between curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy
  • Health, Safety & Safeguarding – Know health, safety, and well-being frameworks, including safeguarding responsibilities
  • Policies & Information Management – Follow policies for collecting, storing, and sharing information securely
  • Inclusive Practice & Equity – Apply principles of equality, diversity, inclusion, and sustainability in education
  • Learning & Development – Understand learning theories, child development patterns, and barriers to learning with strategies to overcome them
  • Assessment & Observation – Know assessment principles, observation methods, and how to record and report outcomes
  • SEND & Additional Support – Understand SEND policies, early identification, assessment tools, and strategies to support learners with SEND
  • Social & Emotional Well-being – Promote well-being, resilience, and positive behaviour for learning using evidence-based approaches
  • Professional Practice & Teamwork – Apply reflective practice, coaching/mentoring principles, effective communication, and teamwork strategies
  • Technology & Resources – Use digital tools, equipment, and resources safely and effectively to advance learning

Integrated foundation degree. This is a level 5 Apprenticeship. It can be attended online or in person.

What next?

Apprentices who complete this programme will become fully-qualified, and experienced Specialist Teaching Assistant. 94% of apprentices remain in employment after completing their training.
