About this course

About this apprenticeship

All technicians will be required to work on typical plumbing elements such as hot and cold water systems and storage, supplies to dwellings and associated pipework, above-ground pipework, connection to below-ground, sanitary pipework, fittings and furniture. Appliances and equipment can include central heating boilers, bathroom furniture, sanitary appliances, drainage and rainwater systems. Further to that, technicians will specialise in one of three areas: Domestic gas fired hot water heating appliances technician, installation and maintenance of domestic natural gas systems and central heating and hot water appliances.

What you will learn

  • Health & Safety – Understand legislation, Codes of Practice, and safe working practices for building services and construction
  • Installation Techniques – Know common processes for installing and testing plumbing, heating, and rainwater systems
  • Scientific Principles – Apply basic physics and mechanical principles (pressure, flow, heat transfer) to system design and operation
  • Roles & Responsibilities – Recognize duties of plumbers, heating engineers, gas engineers, and other construction professionals
  • Legislation & Standards – Follow legal requirements and approved guidance for installation, servicing, and repair of systems
  • Communication – Use clear, professional communication with customers, suppliers, co-workers, and the public
  • System Layout & Principles – Understand layouts, working principles, and compliance for plumbing, heating, and renewable systems
  • System Selection Factors – Consider building size, energy efficiency, cost, and regulations when choosing systems
  • Testing & Commissioning – Know procedures for testing, commissioning, servicing, maintenance, and fault diagnosis
  • Sizing & Selection – Apply correct methods to size and select systems to meet customer needs and statutory requirements

This Level 3 apprenticeship has an approximate duration of 48 months and delivery is on a day-release college model.

What next?

Apprentices who complete this programme will become fully-qualified, and experienced Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians. 94% of apprentices remain in employment after completing their training.
