Career 6 Industry Week sparks inspiration for students

It’s been a busy week at Career 6 as we hosted Industry Week! Throughout the week, we have welcomed an exciting and diverse range of industry speakers, and students have taken part in a variety of employability sessions, giving them an insight into a number of professions linked to their current studies and career aspirations.

Over the week, students enjoyed sessions from Humberside Police, Yorkshire and Humber CSI, John Barkers Solicitors, Wilkin Chapman LLP Solicitors, senior teaching professionals, prison and probations services, and various NHS practitioners including adult nurses, palliative clinical nurse specialists, operating department practitioners and educational psychologists.

Along with our industry speaker sessions, students also undertook workshops exploring apprenticeships, progressing into university and employability skills such as CV writing, applying for jobs and job interview skills.

Tom Hughes, Head of Career 6, said, “It’s been such a fantastic week. The students have gained so much insight from the sessions, and I am so thankful to all the industry professionals who have given up their time to come and talk to our groups.

“It is sometimes difficult for learners to see the world past their qualifications, so to see professionals who have studied what they have studied, and then gone on to be successful in their careers is so inspiring and uplifting for them. It helps them to see how their efforts in their studies will pay off in years to come. One of our guests from John Barkers was a Career 6 alumni, so it was really great to hear about their journey since college!”

Here’s what our students had to say about the week!

Rose Channon – Law School pathway

“For me, I particularly found the talk with John Barkers Solicitors interesting as it gave me an insight into what it is really like to be a solicitor working within law and even what it is like being a trainee solicitor. As someone who is interested in working in the legal system, I found it beneficial to hear from them and understand the reality behind being a solicitor. It’s helped me understand if it’s the right fit for me in the future and that there are many opportunities in law in Grimsby.”

Katy Martin – Forensic and Criminal Investigation pathway

“Industry week has been great! It has allowed an insight into how we can work towards our careers and the different aspects of the job. For me, the most valuable part was the CSI workshop. It allowed me to build knowledge of a career in CSI as well as the application process and working through the ranks!”

Bailey Watson – Law School pathway

“This week has been intriguing and unexpected. The amount of amazing guest speakers and their stories and experience gave me multiple choices on what I could do as for a career. Going through these sessions helped me to realise what sort of career I want to pursue, thank you to the college for this amazing opportunity.”

We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the industry professionals that visited us this week to speak to our students.
