Work experience and placements

Work experience gives young people insight into industries related to their course of study.

Students

T-Level courses are two-year courses taken after GCSE that are equivalent to the A-Levels. During this course, 80% of your learning is practical learning at college, and 20% is work experience within the industry equating to 315 hours of real life experience.

Mandatory work experience

Mandatory work experience is incorporated within your chosen course of study. There are various hours required depending on course levels,
content, and suitability. This will be outlined when you enrol onto your chosen course of study. For example, Level 2 Health and Social Care has
36 hours of work experience within the course outline, meaning you’ll get to spend 36 hours outside of the classroom getting hands-on experience with an industry professional!

University placements

University placements are a core component of higher education courses. By linking theory to practice, we’ll enhance your learning from the classroom in your chosen field of work. You’ll benefit from interacting with professionals and industry mentorship to support your professional development throughout your higher education course.

How we’ll help with your placement

Our employability and placement advisors are available to help with sourcing your placements and will help you interact with employers. Throughout your time in the workplace, they’ll make sure that you are safe and happy on your placement and will be on hand to support your success. They’ll also help get you real world ready by conducting CV and cover letter workshops as well as interview preparation sessions.

Employers

Why take a student on work experience?

With mandatory work experience and placements being a critical cornerstone of modern education, employers have an exciting opportunity to form and shape the future workforce. Having a student
onboard for work experience or as a long-term placement gives valuable experience to the young person, allowing them insight into the working
world and supporting the growth of local talent.

Benefits of taking a student on work experience

Your organisation can significantly benefit from introducing young people into the workplace:

  • A young person can bring new, fresh ideas to the business.
  • Placements assist the community and enhance environmental, social,
    and governance contributions.
  • Mentorship develops your current staff by improving management
    skills and offering new responsibilities.

How Grimsby Institute supports employers

Our work experience and placement team will collaborate with you as the employer. We’ll meet with you to discuss and analyse your business needs and then match you with a student from our current cohort based on personality, aspirations, and course content.

You can meet with your student before they start, and we’ll ensure the student is prepped for the workplace. Our team will be on hand
throughout the process, conducting regular visits to ensure the placement works for both you and the learner.

We seek placement opportunities across various sectors and industries, including hair and beauty, construction, digital marketing, and more. There’s no obligation to offer a permanent job at the end of the placement, so please get in touch to discuss hosting a learner in your workplace.
