Microsoft Showcase College

Recognised for Innovation

Showcase College 2019

2019 started on a high for the Grimsby Institute after it was highlighted as a Microsoft Showcase College. Out of all of the colleges in the UK, the Grimsby Institute is one of 12 to be awarded the Microsoft Showcase College status. A huge success for both staff and learners.

Since April 2018, staff have worked relentlessly to earn the Microsoft Innovative Educator (#CertifiedMIE) status, with many since progressing to Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts (#MIEE).

The Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) programmes recognise global educator visionaries who are using technology to pave the way for their peers for better learning and student outcomes.

What does that mean to our learners?

FdSc Animal Management students were given the opportunity to join a virtual field trip to Jardim Zoológico in Lisbon. Via Skype, students were transported 1,530 miles from a lecture theatre on a cold October day in Grimsby to a vibrant and sunny Portuguese zoo. Students were provided with a personal guided tour of the zoo, exploring facilities and viewing just some of the 2,000+ animals from over 300 species. Students went away from this session completely buzzing! They had shared their lesson with Sumatran tigers, koalas and snow leopards, and a cold day in Grimsby was transformed through a unique and exciting virtual field trip. Imagine that!

Other ways that the Microsoft programme has impacted our learners include:

– Virtual subject specialist guest speakers being invited to present to our learners, sharing perspectives and discussing theories from across the globe.

– Courses are becoming totally paper free, meaning the cost of printing assignments is reduced. Learners are also able to submit assignments online from their own devices in their own time, enabling a quicker turnaround for formative feedback.

– Learners are able to use technology to reduce barriers to learning. For example, dyslexia, hearing impairments, visual impairments, physical disabilities and financial and geographical barriers.
