HNC Mechanical Engineering for England (HTQ)
About This Course
Our HNC Mechanical Engineering for England has been aligned with the occupational standard for Engineering Manufacturing Technician and approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE). Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) have been approved to meet relevant sector occupational standards.
The programme evaluates the underpinning areas of engineering, design, processes, systems and technology, including various branches of science and mathematics.
It is designed to provide students who are seeking to further their career in a range of manufacturing, processing and service industries, e.g. Chemical plant, Refinery, oil and gas, renewables, offshore, marine, automotive, refrigeration plant, etc. . The HNC provides students who have completed a BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline with a thorough understanding of eight further engineering subjects.
On completion of the HNC in Mechanical Engineering, students can progress to the HND in General Engineering.
Students will study three mandatory core units and five specialist units.
Course Person Specification Full Course SpecificationApplicants will normally hold a BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering discipline. Applicants are also required to hold English and Maths GCSE (or equivalent) at grade C/4.

Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. Students will be expected to work together in an informal environment as well as in formal classes where a culture of dignity, courtesy and mutual respect with staff and their peers is essential. A variety of methods will be used such as lectures, workshops, student led seminars and practical sessions. There may be opportunities to integrate a work-based or placement opportunity. Students will be visited in the workplace by a member of Institute staff to ensure a positive partnership between the employer / mentor and to monitor that learning in the workplace is effective. Workplace learning is designed to support the development of an employable graduate equipped with the attributes, skills and knowledge to progress within a global market.
Graduates can undertake roles in different areas of mechanical engineering as follows: Engineering Technician, Mechanical Engineering Technician, Engineering Manufacturing Technician, Technician (Mechanical), Technician Mechanics, Integration and Test Technician, Assistant Project Manager.
Further study at level 5: Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering for England at The Grimsby Institute, employment in industry as an Engineer or to continue studies at another university.
