About This Course

This programme gives you a practical foundation for working in the film industry. BA (Hons) Digital Film Production is the perfect course for you if you want to become the next director, cinematographer, documentary film-maker, or you want to produce the next big budget streaming original. This dynamic and innovative degree allows you to immerse yourself in the craft of film production and imaginative theoretical concepts as you develop your own creative ideas. You will gain hands-on experience and produce original content, delivered across multidisciplinary platforms that mirror real-world practices. You will work alongside experienced industry professionals and production crews made up of your peers on other courses (SFX & Props, Performing Arts, Creative Writing) to develop and produce the content you want to see, giving you the opportunity to enter regional, national, and international film competitions and bringing your skills and ideas to the forefront of this fast paced and exciting industry.

Entry Requirements

Standard Offer:
The successful applicant will require 80 UCAS Points in a media related subject, or 60 Access to Higher Education Credits (of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3). You are required to hold English and Maths GCSE (or equivalent) at Grade C/4. A portfolio/body of work will be required to evidence an informed interest in and appreciation of the subject area.

Non-Standard Offer:
The non-standard entry pathway is intended to support students who may not meet the standard academic entry requirements of a HE programme, normally Level 3 qualifications which attract UCAS points (for instance A-Levels or BTEC Level 3 courses). An applicant must be able to demonstrate recent work/experience in the relevant sector which would give them skills and knowledge comparable to applicants with Level 3 qualifications.

Level 4 – Year 1 (Certificate Stage):
In your first year, you will build a solid base of practical skills and theoretical knowledge, giving you a deeper understanding of the filmmaking process and its results. You will be given the opportunity to work alongside other student productions as members of the crew.

Level 5 – Year 2 (Diploma Stage):
In your second year, you will expand and test your skills and passion to a higher creative standard. Ensuring that you are developing a professional skillset, you’ll engage with cinema on a deeper critical level. You will have the opportunity to develop as department heads across short film productions.

Level 6 – Year 3 (Honours Stage):
At this level you are expected to be self-led and set your own defined projects. You will spend a significant amount of time developing, producing, and distributing a short film, working collaboratively across other departments readying you for industry in this fast-paced environment.

Learning & Teaching Methods

You will be assessed during the degree through a series of coursework-based projects approximately every 8 weeks using industry standards. There are no formal exams, but just like in industry you will be expected to meet deadlines.

Once you’ve successfully completed the BA (Hons) degree, you’ll have a clear understanding of the industry, relevant practical skills, as well as the academic understanding that will allow you to progress into the film industry.Past students have progressed into working across a variety of production companies (BBC, ITV, Channel 4), established their own successful media companies, as well as traveling the world working on commercials!
