The music tutors at the Grimsby Institute are experts in their field and have a wealth of real industry experience. They’ll teach you the different areas of the industry, from performance techniques and music technology, to composition and the music business. You’ll get to create your own album through our very own recording label, White Box Studios, and run your own launch party! Plus, established bands will come in to answer all your questions, and you’ll get to see them perform. Our fantastic team of music tutors, with over 50 years’ experience in the industry, will help you operate our incredible facilities here at the institute. With four industry-standard digital recording studios equipped with the latest Pro Tools and Logic Pro X software, we are ready to help you record the next big hit!

Our studios are complete with powerful Apple Mac technology, complemented with the latest digital work surfaces. We believe our recording studios really set us apart and are the best for recording in the local area. Our four fully-equipped rehearsal spaces will allow you to perform with like-minded musicians, complemented by a full backline of Tama drums, Marshall, Orange and Blackstar amplification and full vocal PA to ensure your rehearsal is as professional as possible. With our two MIDI suites, with nearly 40 iMac computers loaded with the latest software, you can mix undisturbed in the classroom and generate any documents with a complimentary copy of MS Office suite for each learner.The Level 1 course includes music as well as performing arts, giving learners the chance to experience both areas (while studying Maths and English alongside) with a view to specialising at Level 2. The Level 2 Music Practitioner qualification is a one year course and aims to equip learners with the skills to develop realistic employment opportunities in the music industry, or to progress into higher education. The Level 2 Music programme aims to effectively prepare learners for study in music performance and production. The Level 3 Creative Music Industries course further develops skills in song writing, performance, production and more! Our Level 3 is equivalent to three A-Levels and is a brilliant springboard into university. It is an expectation that our learners continue from Level 2 to Level 3, depending on achievement. And it doesn’t end there…we have our own Level 4 degree courses in Popular Music Performance and Music Production for those serious future music industry pioneers!
Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following list offers a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.
PLEASE NOTE IN SOME AREAS WHERE THERE IS A HIGHER MATHS, ENGLISH OR SCIENCE CONTENT, OR WHERE TECHNICAL SKILLS ARE REQUIRED, THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS ARE HIGHER THAN STATED BELOW. APPLICANTS ARE ADVISED OF ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIVIDUAL COURSES AT THEIR INTERVIEW AND THIS IS CHECKED AT ENROLMENT. FOR CREATIVE COURSES A PORTFOLIO REVIEW OR AUDITION MAY BE REQUIRED AT INTERVIEW.
Entry Level 3 Programmes
No formal entry qualifications but subject to approval from the Foundation Learning Assessment Team.
Level 1 Programmes
GCSEs grades1-2 or E to G or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates.
Level 2 Programmes
Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 (previously D) or above including Maths and English language OR Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 or above including Maths and English language and relevant subject qualification OR Minimum of Level 1 course in chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at Level 1.
Level 3 Programmes
Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4 (previously C) or above including Maths and English language OR Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Maths and English language and relevant subject qualification OR Minimum of Level 2 course in chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at level 2.
Progressing to each level of study
Once you successfully completed your course you may be able to progress to the next level, following a satisfactory interview with a Tutor. If you’ve finished your Level 3 course you will be offered advice and guidance from our Career Advisers on how to apply for a place at University through UCAS, or how to apply for a job or an Apprenticeship.
Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 courses generally last one year; Level 3 courses will usually last for two years.
The Music course offers personalised, industry-based work experience placements including music studios, backstage work, retail environments and even holiday camps.
Visit important places such as Abbey Road studios and get the chance to see a live show in London. There’s also a chance to take part in ‘Battle of the Bands’ as part of our intercollege competition and a whole host of guest speakers and live acts speaking and performing throughout the year.
