Motor Vehicle - Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles

About This Course

The Motor Vehicle course is mainly practical, with theory elements which will help to back up your projects. All our courses focus on the future, including carbon awareness and electric and hybrid vehicle maintenance, operation and replacement offering hi-tech equipment to train and prepare for employment. These courses have been designed to meet the needs of the Heavy Vehicle industry. We have many links with industry employers who will visit the campus throughout the course, providing learners with valuable insights into the motor vehicle trade.As a further bonus, this course offers the opportunity for work experience and the right candidate could even be selected for an apprenticeship.

  • Identify and Agree Motor Vehicle Customer Service Needs
  • Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
  • Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Engine Units and Components
  • Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Electrical Units and Components
  • Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Chassis Units and Components
  • Inspecting Light Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods
  • Overhauling Light Vehicle Engine Mechanical Units
  • Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Driveline Units and Components
  • Overhauling Light Vehicle Transmission Units
  • Overhauling Light Vehicle Steering and Suspension Units
  • Removing and Fitting of Basic Light Vehicle Mechanical, Electrical and Trim _MET_ Components and Non-Permanently Fixed Vehicle Body Panels
  • Identifying customer needs
  • Diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults
  • Overhauling mechanical, transmission, steering and suspension units

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements for our courses depend on the specific requirements of each Programme of Study and an individual’s previous experience, which will all be discussed during the interview process. The following list offers a guide as to what you might be expected to achieve to gain entry on to a particular level of a course.
PLEASE NOTE IN SOME AREAS WHERE THERE IS A HIGHER MATHS, ENGLISH OR SCIENCE CONTENT, OR WHERE TECHNICAL SKILLS ARE REQUIRED, THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS ARE HIGHER THAN STATED BELOW. APPLICANTS ARE ADVISED OF ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR INDIVIDUAL COURSES AT THEIR INTERVIEW AND THIS IS CHECKED AT ENROLMENT. FOR CREATIVE COURSES A PORTFOLIO REVIEW OR AUDITION MAY BE REQUIRED AT INTERVIEW.

Entry Level 3 Programmes
No formal entry qualifications but subject to approval from the Foundation Learning Assessment Team.

Level 1 Programmes
GCSEs grades1-2 or E to G or equivalent, including Foundation Awards and Entry Level Certificates.

Level 2 Programmes
Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 (previously D) or above including Maths and English language OR Minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 3 or above including Maths and English language and relevant subject qualification OR Minimum of Level 1 course in chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at Level 1.

Level 3 Programmes
Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4 (previously C) or above including Maths and English language OR Minimum of 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including Maths and English language and relevant subject qualification OR Minimum of Level 2 course in chosen subject at merit or above and English language and Maths at level 2.

Progressing to each level of study
Once you successfully completed your course you may be able to progress to the next level, following a satisfactory interview with a Tutor. If you’ve finished your Level 3 course you will be offered advice and guidance from our Career Advisers on how to apply for a place at University through UCAS, or how to apply for a job or an Apprenticeship.

Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 courses generally last one year; Level 3 courses will usually last for two years.

Work Experience

As part of our course, learners are offered the chance to gain practical, hands-on industry experience. We offer these placements with a range of different employers, varying from small garages to main dealerships.

Trips, Visits & Guest Speakers

During your course you will experience guest speakers from industry including the Santa Pod Raceway Director, the RAF and the Formula 1 motorsport school. Visits to vehicle component manufacturers and vehicle shows at Birmingham NEC Arena. You will also take part in world skills competitions throughout the year which is an excellent opportunity to showcase your skills.

Learning & Teaching Methods

Your core training will be hands on and practical, with sessions in our industry standard workshops, including the new Elite Centre; our sustainable energy engineering hub where you will work on hybrid an electric vehicles.

What Next?

Successful learners have gone onto working in industry, including; Motor racing, Wind turbines, Plant/Agricultural equipment and forklift engineering. If you are looking for furthering your study, you can apply to the Motorsports College, or the University Centre Grimsby to complete a HNC in Engineering.
