UCG Online Learning

Hello Student, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for the excellent and responsible way you have been acting whilst studying at the University Centre Grimsby.

Things are a little different this year which we explained in our published information:

“This course is primarily designed for face to face learning with you attending your lessons for the specified hours within the validation document. However, there may be periods of study where the government advises TEC Partnership that it is not safe to open campuses or there is limited access due to social distancing measures. If the campus is closed TEC Partnership will deliver your sessions online and offer you the necessary support and resources remotely. If there is limited access due to social distancing measures a blended model will be adopted with some lessons happening in small groups and others happening using online sessions and support.”

So far this year we have been working within bubbles based on your classes where you can choose whether you wear face coverings with the tutor maintaining social distancing. As such delivery has been normal but in all communal areas of the college we require the wearing of face coverings (unless you have exemption) so that we can protect each other. Some services are also limited to ensure your safety. As a college if we become aware of infection within a bubble that group will be shut down with everyone affected contacted and told to self isolate following guidance by public health professionals.

However, government have mandated that all Higher Education providers must close on a date between 3-9th December and move to online learning. This is to ensure that students have the opportunity to travel home safely and can, with a period of self-isolation if required, experience a normal Winter break. This is obviously particularly relevant to those students who are studying in different parts of the county to where they live. Whilst we have a small number of students this applies to, we have asked for clarity from government and they have confirmed this will apply to us. As a result, we have taken the decision that all face to face delivery will cease at 17:00 hours on Friday 4th December. Teaching and Learning will continue for 2 more weeks but this this be online only. Sessions will be happening and your attendance will be expected via whichever method selected by your teachers. They will inform you of this in advance of the sessions. If you were due to complete an assessment which requires attendance at the university centre your teachers will let you know what changes are made to this.

The university centre and other buildings will be open to Higher Education students for this period however, if you need to contact your teachers you should do so by email or during your online lessons.

Should you have concerns about access to equipment to allow you to study online please contact your success coach who will be able to organise an assessment of your needs. Students in our Halls of residence will be contacted to discuss your travel window to return home should you wish to over the Winter break.

Currently the government have mandated the closure only for the period leading up to the Winter break so normal delivery will be resuming in January. Whenever there are changes we will endeavour to inform you about this as soon as we can via email and
Canvas. Your tutors and your success coaches can be contacted via email if you have any questions.

We really want to support you to have an enjoyable year at UCG, and we will do our best to answers all your questions quickly. If the question is important to you, it’s important to us. If you feel anxious about anything please speak up.

Thank you again for working with us during this period.
