About the VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy programme
The VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy is a vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career as a sports massage practitioner working with injured clients. Through this qualification you will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to apply sports massage methods competently to recent non-acute injury and pre-existing conditions.
This will include a range of massage techniques additional to those acquired at Level 3, which include: connective tissue, soft tissue release, corrective frictions, trigger points and muscle energy techniques.
You will develop your subjective and objective assessment skills to include clinical reasoning and the use of a wide range of special and functional muscle test.
You will be able to give advice on treatment modalities used to support soft tissue repair at each stage of injury. In addition you will explore a wide range of patho-physiology and acquire a deeper understanding of anatomy and physiology through the practical application of the newly acquired objective tests.
This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years and over.
Previous attainment of a Level 3 qualification in Sports Massage Therapy or equivalent

Conducting Subjective and Objective assessment

- The influences and effects of client information on treatment planning
- The effects of anatomy, physiology & pathology on human function
- The principles and practice of objective assessment techniques
- Conducting subjective and objective assessment
- Devise a sport massage treatment plan
Provide Sports Massage Techniques to prevent and manage injury
- Principles of soft tissue techniques used in sports massage
- Appling soft tissue techniques in sports massage treatments
Treatment modalities to support soft tissue repair
- Treatments to support soft tissue repair
- The use of cryotherapy during soft tissue repair
- The use of heat treatments during soft tissue repair
Learning & Teaching Methods
This course is primarily designed for face to face learning with you attending your lessons for the specified hours within the validation document. However, there may be periods of study where the government advises TEC Partnership that it is not safe to open campuses or there is limited access due to social distancing measures. If the campus is closed TEC Partnership will deliver your sessions online and offer you the necessary support and resources remotely. If there is limited access due to social distancing measures a blended model will be adopted with some lessons happening in small groups and others happening using online sessions and support. We will make decisions on the delivery hours for each programme as government advice becomes clearer. We are currently reviewing this programme and some elements of the published programmes may need to change in order for students to achieve. We will advise you of these changes once they are completed.
Teaching and learning methods for this programme will include practical demonstrations, theory lessons and work experience within the college treatment room and sporting events.
This qualification will prepare you for employment as a sports massage practitioner working with injured clients. Learners who complete this qualification will be able to gain employment and obtain insurance to work as a sports massage practitioner. Employment opportunities exist in a variety of settings, including:
- Private health clubs and leisure centres
- Sports centres and clubs
- Working independently/ self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
