About the In-Service Certificate in Education, Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Teaching in the Education, Training and Skills Sector) programme

The In-Service programme is suitable for those wanting to pursue a career in teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector; that is teaching students age 14 years and above. The programme is part-time and suitable for those who are currently employed in a teaching role.

This is a two year course.

Entry Requirements

The minimum qualification you need to gain entry to the course is at Level 3 in the subject(s) that you intend to teach. You must have GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above (or Level 2 equivalent) before attending for interview. Those wishing to enter the Professional and Postgraduate Certificate in Education routes must hold a UK bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).

You will need to demonstrate 5 days teaching experience in the classroom prior to interview.

All applicants must have a minimum of 100 paid teaching hours over the two years of the programme with no less than 50 hours in any one year. Applicants will also need to provide an appropriate reference and have completed an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. (This will normally have been carried out by your employer). All applicants will need a workplace mentor; normally a qualified and experienced colleague teaching the applicant’s subject. Guidance will be offered relating to the role of the workplace mentor.

Learning & Teaching Methods

One evening per week structured seminars and lectures from your PGCE tutors and specialist guest lecturers.

Lessons will also include On-line learning, work placements, Peer Assessment, Presentations, Poster Presentation and a Year End Conference. You will also do 100 teaching during the duration of the course in your own classroom setting with the support of a subject specialist Mentor.
