Are you looking for a career in mechanical engineering? Have you studied up to Edexcel National level, or equivalent, and now wish to gain higher qualifications?

This programme results in a national qualification that is recognised by a number of professional Institutions such as The Institution of Mechanical Engineers. It covers a broad range of fields from mechanical principles and engineering science, through to business management and thermodynamics – supported by practical activities in laboratories.

On successful completion, you will have developed the necessary skills required to work in industry at a senior level across a number of technical disciplines such as design and development, production and commissioning and testing.

Entry Requirements

For 2017 entry onwards: applicants require a minimum of 64 UCAS points from the Edexcel Extended Diploma in Engineering, or A Level Maths and Science subject. In line with the widening participation brief, the Institute encourages applications from those who lack formal academic qualifications. All such applicants will be set an appropriate piece of work and a judgement made taking into account their academic potential and relevant experience.

Learning & Teaching Methods

Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. Students will be expected to work together in an informal environment as well as in formal classes where a culture of dignity, courtesy and mutual respect with staff and their peers is essential. A variety of methods will be used such as lectures, workshops, student led seminars and practical sessions. Integrating a work-based or placement opportunity, students will be visited in the workplace by a member of Institute staff to ensure a positive partnership between the employer mentor and to monitor that learning in the workplace is effective. Workplace learning is designed to support the development of an employable graduate equipped with the attributes, skills and knowledge to progress within a global market.

Programme Benefits

Upon successful completion of this qualification, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to pursue a new career, or advance an existing one in the Engineering sector. Engineering careers can begin with work opportunities with small to medium enterprise organisations (those with less than 250 employees) or with national and multi-national organisations. Many also go onto self employment which is usually not possible until a graduate has several years experience. Other graduates will go on to work for large organisations which may comprise roles in engineering management; engineering maintenance and servicing, project management, design engineering, planning or working on large infrastructure projects linked to the engineering and construction industries.
