Get prepared for the TV and film industries as a Prosthetics and Special Effects Make-up artist.
The BA (Hons) Special Effects Make Up Design and Prosthetics programme (validated by the University of Hull) is a very versatile and modern degree that will equip you the skills and knowledge you need to create memorable characters for film, television and theatre productions.

Students’ focus is on special effects prosthetics and character design for this fast-moving industry. Learners are exposed to industry-standard techniques, linking both artistic and creative expression while incorporating key workshop manufacturing fundamentals. Each level of study will engage and challenge learners to expand upon their skillset, using a variety of materials within specific professional contexts.

By exploring a very wide range of materials and techniques, students will have the chance to practice every aspect of the Special Effects artist’s role within the industry. They will see their designs and ideas materialize and will create a functional and comprehensive portfolio which will allow them to promote themselves effectively in the industry.

Our students also get the opportunity to be taught and work side to side with award winning professionals with long experience and passion for their art, get inspired and participate to a holistic learning experience.

Our cohorts range from eighteen year-olds to mature students of all ages and include applicants who’ve just finished college as well as those who have been out of education for a while and want to get back into it. The new and transferable skills that we provide you with, require nothing more than your dedication and desire to learn the art of “behind the scenes”.

Entry Requirements

Applicants require 80 UCAS points (UCAS 2017 tariff), with minimum of grade ‘C’ in both GCSE Maths and English. This equates to MMP or above at BTEC National Diploma, CCD at A-Level, or Merit on the Diploma Foundation Studies (Art, Design and Media).

However, in line with the widening participation brief and lifelong learning strategy, the Institute will also encourage applications from non-traditional learners who lack formal academic qualifications. All such non-traditional applicants will be interviewed, and will carry out a bespoke assignment in order to assess their academic potential and relevant experience.

Learning & Teaching Methods

This is a full time course. Students will need to attend university two-three days a week. They will also need time for self-directed study and assessment completion, which can be done at home or at university in “open workshop” time to suit individuals’ commitments and preferences.

Since the entire course is designed to address individual needs and each learner has a lot of one to one time with the tutors, the opportunities are endless. Students achieve an extremely high level of development because we leave no questions unanswered. Other than the default skills that the course is providing to the learners, we are always open to new ideas and innovating techniques. We don’t only expect research from the students, instead we continuously seek for the newest methods and materials to keep our teaching up to date.

All students are required to pay an annual Student Levy Fee of £250. This payment contributes towards bulk materials used in the workshop through out the academic year: Plaster, Silicone, fibreglass, clay etc. Students are required to purchase a specific kit containing materials and tools vital for prosthetic manufacture and application which will see you through your degree and on in to industry. The kit is priced at £400 and successful applicants will be instructed on how to order. Workshops, general materials and tools are provided by the course.
