Simon raises £3400 for Air Ambulance after near-fatal accident
Grimsby Institute and University Centre Grimsby tutor, Simon Bryson, recently completed Southwell Triathlon, raising £3400 for the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, a service that helped to save his life earlier in the year following a near-fatal accident while cycling near Willingham Woods in Lincolnshire with his son.

The accident happened in June 2015 when the front tyre of Simon’s mountain bike blew out after landing from a jump. Simon was airlifted to Hull Royal Infirmary with multiple fractured ribs, a broken collarbone, a double fracture to his pelvis, a punctured lung and a fractured neck.

As a way of thanking Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance for their lifesaving work, Simon intended to compete in the Woodhall Spa Sprint Tri in June 2016 but was knocked from his bike during training and sustained three breaks to his RH collar bone, three broken ribs and another punctured lung on top of the multitude of breaks from his mountain biking accident.

Simon said: “I have to admit I was incredibly unlucky but One Step Beyond, the organisers of the triathlon, were kind enough to defer the entry to the last in their series to the Southwell Last Min Tri which took place in September.”

Simon was apprehensive about whether he would be able to complete it with multiple injuries sustained from both accidents but was determined to repay the £1200 it cost to fly him from Market Rasen to Hull last June.  Simon completed the Triathlon, which includes a 400m swim, 14mile bike ride and a three mile run in the beautiful setting of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, in impressive times considering what he has been through, so far raising over £3400 for the Air Ambulance.

Simon continued: “The support from Grimsby Institute staff and learners has been phenomenal with students and staff helping in the fund raising activities.”

Simon has also been asked to speak at two student conferences on determination and goals and aspirations linking it to his ‘journey’. He said as he crossed the finishing line that: "A mix of emotions were rushing through him" and how incredibly grateful he was to have had the help of Air Ambulance and his son on that fateful day.
