Work Based Learning

Aims and Objectives
Placements provide you with the opportunity to spend time working in a relevant sector to the Foundation Degree or degree you are studying and provides you with an insight into your subject and career potential.
Aims of Placement through real world learning
The aim is to enable students to relate their academic studies to the practical situations encountered in the working environment relating to the sector of study.
Student
  • To learn, develop and apply new skills appropriate to the professional setting in which they are working.
  • To apply knowledge and skills acquired in the academic setting to the practical demands of the employing organisation.
  • To develop and utilise appropriate interpersonal skills in the organisation setting.
  • To develop professionalism and refine their communication skills in line with working in a professional capacity.
Timing
The period during which students must undertake their professional placements varies across programmes (please seek tutor guidance.) Students are required to be in placement for the duration of the programme they are studying. Guidance on placement hours are discussed at interview and presented within the literature of the programme.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
Students studying on programmes where a placement is an essential element of the programme will require a full enhanced DBS (cost incurred by the student). Failure to disclose appropriately may result in suspension or termination of studies.
Duration
Students must complete the relevant amount of hours, therefore it is to be agreed between the student and allocated mentor in the workplace how these hours are completed. In some circumstances, these placements are unpaid although students who are already employed in a relevant area can use this as placement experience (this must be agreed between the student and Placement Coordinator), although the exact same procedures will be undertaken by the Placement Coordinators regardless.
