About the FdSc Community Mental Health programme

Over a four UK adults experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year and one in six experiences this at any given time. As such, health and social care services must ensure that they develop and employ staff best placed to meet the needs of such a significant number of people.
This programme will prepare you to be one of these essential service providers giving you a broad and balanced knowledge and understanding of key aspects of mental health. These include mental health promotion, advocacy, law, policy and practice,as well as a high degree of application to practice, supporting a pathway for lifelong learning and the opportunity to progress to other qualifications to further your career.

Entry requirements

For 2017 entry onwards: 80 UCAS points from two A' Levels (or equivalent level 3 qualification) or an Access to HE Diploma. Students must hold English and Maths GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent). The Institute will also encourage applications from students who lack formal qualifications. All applicants will be interviewed, set an appropriate piece of work (1500 word essay) and a judgement made taking into account their academic potential and relevant practice experience.All applicants will be required to undertake a target skills assessment as part of their admissions process.

All students must complete a minimum of 200 hours of mandatory work placement over the duration of the programme. Students are expected to complete relevant health screening questionnaires (when necessary for placement requirements) and DBS checks before entry into any work placement. This will be a cost to students prior to commencement.

  • What Next

    Examples of job roles include Assistant Practitioner within a community mental health setting such as supported housing, day centres, community mental health centres, MIND, residential or nursing care homes.
    Progression from the programme includes - working as community based practitioners, supporting individuals, families, drug and alcohol provision, mental health promotion, older adult mental health care or emotional wellbeing with skills leading to senior roles. Alternatively, you may wish to continue to further study at Level 6 for top-up to a BSc qualification in a relevant subject area such as the BSc Health and Social Care.

    Programme Benefits

    You will gain skills enabling you to recognise the signs of mental health and emotional difficulty, plan holistic care, learn how to support and understand the dynamics of mental health and illness and have an understanding of the key interventions used within sector. The aspects of the contemporary understanding of mental health will be approached from both psychological and sociological perspectives. This will be enhanced by understanding the underpinning legislation and policy which guides the provision of community mental health. By the end of the programme you will have learnt not only the theory and research behind evidence based practice, but also will have had the chance to implement the skills learnt through the work based learning placement. Following successful completion of the programme, you will have the opportunity to apply for level 6 study to further enhance your career potential.


    Learning & Teaching Methods

    Methods of learning and teaching are designed to support students in becoming active members of a learning community. You will be expected to work together with other students in an informal environment as well as in formal classes where a culture of dignity, courtesy and mutual respect with staff and their peers is essential.

    A variety of methods will be used such as lectures, interactive lectures, seminars, workshops, group work, student led seminars, tutor-led seminars together with peer support . The programme is delivered by a team of experienced professionals within their relevant fields of expertise. Workplace learning is designed to support the development of an employable graduate equipped with the attributes, skills and knowledge to progress within a global market. Integrating a work-based or placement opportunity, during the programme you will be visited in the workplace by a member of staff to ensure a positive partnership between the employer mentor and to monitor that learning in the workplace is effective. Your experiential learning will be enhanced by observing and working alongside sector specialists as you develop your own skills as a practitioner.

    You will also be welcomed to attend a series of 'guest lectures' throughout the progression of your studies, from which you will gain specific and focused information surrounding key areas of your interest. Relevant, insightful visits to key places of interest will also contribute to your learning.
