Mechanical Engineering

The Grimsby Institute’s Engineering Department has some of the most up-to-date training equipment and industry standard workshops in the UK that will help you train for a career in one of the UK’s largest areas for job growth.

By 2022 there is expected to be at least 445 more jobs in Electrical Engineering* in our region and, with the chance of earning up to £59,000 each year, now is the ideal time to get the skills and qualifications you need for rewarding career.

Set your course to Electrical Engineering and you will train in our Engineering and Renewable Energy Centre which offers the unique chance of working on a fully functioning wind turbine, hydraulic rigs, biomass boilers and other industry equipment, that’s all been installed to help our learners develop the up-to-date skills that industry is looking for.

In Mechanical Engineering learners will cover practical aspects such as using lathes and milling machines and hand forging as well as the very important theory including maths for technicians and engineering drawing.
Mechanical engineers make and design components for machinery and maintain machinery and this is reflected in the course.

Thomas Jaehrig
Thomas Jaehrig is a 17-year-old Apprentice, currently training on an ECITB programme at the Centre for the Assessment of Technical Competence Humber (CATCH) facility in Fabricom GDF SUEZ.

Thomas was awarded the Grimsby Institute’s ECITB Apprentice of the Year Award 2015. Thomas said: “It was a big surprise and great honour to win the award. The tutors really know what they’re talking about, about the industry and the real world of work. CATCH is brilliant it’s a great facility to train in and I’m hoping to go on to study for a HNC next year.”
